INTRODUCTION

A CD (Information Package) containing hands-on documents for everyday use has been prepared. The CD contains hands-on information on agriculture, fisheries and public health documents that island communities may find it useful in their daily life, and in particular, in raising their awareness on a broad range of topics and issues.  

STATUS

The information package CD has been distributed to all atolls schools having computers, atoll capitals and schools in Male' and other ministries, departments and NGO’s.

DESCRIPTION

The initiative to digitize the Information Package was a component of ‘Preparatory Assistance for Formulation of National ICT policy and Community Based ICT Initiative' a project funded by UNDP. Access to information is essential for community empowerment. It is equally important for making informed decisions by communities with limited access to the Internet and other sources of direct information.

Recent advances in ICTs have enabled information to be digitized and disseminated at very competitive rates. Easy and affordable access to information would not only bring about a literate nation but also ensure good governance and efficient services.  That is why the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and other bilateral and multilateral agencies are increasingly focusing on the dissemination of information to the communities in developing countries through Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).
