INTRODUCTION
Government Network of Maldives (GNM) is being establised under the Network Turnkey, as one of the three main components of the Information Technology Development Project and will connect government and parastatal agnecies in Male’ and 20 Atoll Capitals.
PROJECT STATUS
Contract for the Implementation of the Government Network of Maldives was awarded to ST Electronics Info Comm Systems (STE-ICS), formally called CET Technology Pte Ltd, of Singapore on 28th of February 2005. Male’ MAN infrastructure has been completed and currently user sites are being migrated to the GNM. In addition the islands infrastructure installation and Satellite Hub validation are underway.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Government Network of Maldives, established under Network Turnkey component of the ITDP, is to enable the government to improve efficiency, transparency, and accountability of public sector management by networking government agencies and electronically providing information and services for the public.
DESCRIPTION
The Government Network of Maldives (GNM) is the physical and logical infrastructure enabling data exchange between Government and government related organisations and e-Government Service Platform in a secured and reliable way.
The physical infrastructure will connect all the government organisations and related agencies in Male’ and the 20 Atoll Capitals by the use Fibre, ADSL, and Satellite Network Technologies. Fibre will be the main distribution network technology used and will be laid in the Male’ and the 20 Atoll Capitals. In addition, ADSL technology will be used in Male’ to connect some of the agencies housed in temporary locations. A nation wide Satellite Network will be established to connect all the islands to Male’. In addition, a proof of concept of connecting islands by the use of WiMAX technology will be carried out to establish the feasibility of its use in connecting islands in the Maldivian environment.
The logical infrastructure will enable groups of sites to be connected privately on the GNM physical infrastructure, whilst giving them access to the e-Government Service Platform and portals. A number of private networks, or Intranets, will be setup to facilitate main sites and remote sites or a group of related agencies to effectively and privately share information on the GNM. The main Intranets that will be created is an Intranet for the Government Agencies, an Intranet for Schools, an intranet for faculties of the Maldives College of Higher Education, an intranet for the Courts of Justice and an intranet for the Police.
