The National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) has introduced Ubuntu Desktop Edition and LibreOffice open source office application suite to the government. Introductory sessions held from 9th to 15th June 2011 was attended by 84 senior technical staff from 8 ministries and 51 agencies of the public sector.
The aim of these sessions was to introduce open source software as a viable and ready alternative for proprietary software for administrative work within the public sector through personally experiencing the installation, setup and use of open source software. During these sessions the participants installed open source operating system Ubuntu and setup the Dhivehi language options in Ubuntu and open source office software package LibreOffice to enable simultaneous Dhivehi and English word-processing.
These sessions were conducted as part of NCIT’s standardization program which aims to introduce and increase the contribution and role of open source software in government. A more comprehensive train the trainer program for open source software is planned to be conducted in the near future |
